Odessa became the home of a large Jewish community during the 19th century, and by 1897 Jews were estimated to comprise about 37% of the population. Situated on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea, Odessa has played a significant role in Russian Jewish culture. The principal characteristics that made this community so influential were the consistently increasing growth of the Jewish population and its major contribution to the town’s economic development, characterizing the structuralization of its institutions.
