The Hebrew word for genius is “gaon,” a title Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna was appropriately bestowed with. The Gaon’s extensive range of knowledge left almost no subject he did not thoroughly understand. He was versed in mathematics, astronomy, science, music, philosophy and linguistics in addition to his oeuvre of Jewish writings. Vilna Gaon was an influential Jewish leader in modern history and the leading Torah for many years, making him an authority of his time.
